چکیده

A second-mode stability analysis has been performed for a hypersonic boundary layer on a wall covered by a porous coating with equally spaced cylindrical blind microholes. Massive reduction of the second mode ampliŽ cation is found to be due to the disturbance energy absorption by the porous layer. This stabilization effect was demonstrated by experiments recently conducted on a sharp cone in the T-5 high-enthalpy wind tunnel of the Graduate Aeronautical Laboratories of the California Institute of Technology. Their experimental conŽ rmation of the theoretical predictions underscores the possibility that ultrasonically absorptive porous coatings may be exploited for passive laminar ow control on hypersonic vehicle surfaces.

Passive Control of Hypersonic Boundary-Layer Transition using Regular Porous Coating

Passive control of hypersonic boundary-layer transition using porous coatings has been studied by theoretical analyses, experiments, and numerical simulations. It was found that porous coating stabilizes Mack’s second mode and destabilizes Mack’s first mode. However, there are only few studies on the stabilization efficiency of porous coating. And no work has been reported about the thermochemi...

Stability of Temporally-Evolving Supersonic Boundary Layers over Micro-Cavities for Ultrasonic Absorptive Coatings

Ultrasonic absorptive coatings, consisting of regularly-spaced arrays of micro-cavities, have previously been shown to effectively damp second-mode instability for the purpose of delaying transition in hypersonic boundary layers. However, previous simulations and stability analysis have used approximate porous-wall boundary conditions. Here we investigate the feasibility of using direct numeric...

Wettability of Liquid Mixtures on Porous Silica and Black Soot Layers

Sophisticated manipulation of surface roughness and solid surface energy are widely used to design super-hydrophobic layers. In this work, we designed highly porous silica layer with contact angle (CA) of 145°, and its robustness was promoted with thermal treatment. Wettability of coated layer is studied with CA measurement for different liquid surface tensions using diluted organi...

High-Order Finite-Difference Schemes for Numerical Simulation of Hypersonic Boundary-Layer Transition

Direct numerical simulation (DNS) has become a powerful tool in studying fundamental phenomena of laminar-turbulent transition of high-speed boundary layers. Previous DNS studies of supersonic and hypersonic boundary layer transition have been limited to perfect-gas flow over flat-plate boundary layers without shock waves. For hypersonic boundary layers over realistic blunt bodies, DNS studies ...

Numerical Simulation of Surface Roughness Effects on Receptivity of Hypersonic Flow Over Blunt Cones

The accurate prediction of laminar-turbulent transition in hypersonic boundary layers is a critical part of the aerodynamic heating analyses on hypersonic vehicles. Despite decades of extensive research, the prediction of hypersonic boundary-layer transition is still mostly based on empirical correlation methods or the semi-empirical n e method because a number of physical mechanisms leading to...
